A Journey Through Time to Understand the Foundations of Political Islam
Are you fascinated by the roots of political Islam and its evolution through the centuries? "The Islamists: From Pre-Islamic Arabia to the Ottoman Empire" is your definitive guide to understanding the historical context and development of one of the most influential ideologies in the world.

This is not just another book about Islam, but fills the gap left by several authors on pre-Islamic Arabia. Researcher Vanessa Chamma first outlines the social characteristics of the pre-Islamic era, from tribal society to the process of Arabization, in which Arab identity was constructed through language, not through its origins. Only after this chapter, full of valuable information about the Arab tribes of the time, does the author enter the Islamic period, highlighting the foundations for the construction of Islamic society, or ummah, in which Muslims were key to its survival. The book “The Islamists” shows how they managed to face bitter moments, such as the Mongol invasion and the Crusades, retaking power through the Ottoman Empire.

Approach and Content
This work portrays Islamic history from pre-Islamic Arabia to the fall of the Ottoman Empire, a long period in which several events had consequences for the Islamic world. The book is composed of nine chapters, which not only emphasize the formation of Islamic society, or ummah, in its religious aspect, but also the construction of the caliphates, emphasizing the political, administrative, economic and military areas. Other events, such as the Crusades, the Mongol Invasion and the Islamic Empires, were included, as they contributed to the emergence of new Islamic branches. This work is recommended both for those interested in the subject and for professionals in the academic field, especially for undergraduate and graduate courses in International Relations, History, Geography and related disciplines, in which they address the region of the “Middle East”.
Importance of the Theme
The period of pre-Islamic Arabia has proven to be an essential theme for Islamic historiography, whose approach has been neglected by many historians who have preferred to pay greater attention to the Islamic period from the time of the Prophet Muhammad onwards. This importance was evidenced by the maintenance of some customs in the Islamic Era and helped in archaeological discoveries, discussed in detail by historian Robert G. Hoyland. Due to its central location between India, Africa, ancient Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean area, the movement of people and goods required the consent of the Arab tribes. It was precisely thanks to the help of these tribes that the Assyrian king Esarhaddon in 671 BC, the Persian rulers in 525 BC and Artaxerxes III in 343 BC were able to cross northern Arabia to reach Egypt. In addition to spices such as frankincense, myrrh and other aromatics, Arabia also provided a considerable military reserve, if we take into account its experiences in desert journeys, which could be an important asset for its allies or against its adversaries. This dynamic built and, in some cases, deconstructed alliances that shaped different contexts in the region. Given the above, the relevance of the first chapter of this edition is explained, which addresses various aspects of tribal society in the Pre-Islamic Era.
By providing a thorough and engaging exploration of political Islam from its earliest days to the height of the Ottoman Empire, "The Islamists: From Pre-Islamic Arabia to the Ottoman Empire" is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to understand the historical roots of this influential ideology.

Author Biography
In fact, many of the events during my career took me to the Middle East. Arab culture (cuisine, language and dance) was always present through my strong paternal blood ties. However, what really contributed to my studies were international trips to Syria and Jordan in 2001, and to Lebanon in 2006, when the armed conflict between Hezbollah and Israel broke out. After a few years, I enrolled in the undergraduate course in International Relations and participated in the Scientific Initiation Program. I then began a vast and detailed research on Islamic historiography, which gave rise to the book “The Islamists: Pre-Islamic Arabia to the Ottoman Empire”.
